What is a Patriot Day?
President George W. Bush proclaimed September 11th to be Patriot Day in the United States in 2002. This day is dedicated to remembering all those who perished in the Pentagon and World Trade Center attacks in 2001. Numerous memorial services and celebrations are held nationwide on Patriot Day. Brief History: Patriot Day.
On September 11th, 2001, al-Qaeda terrorists hijacked four planes and intentionally crashed two into the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing all on board and many others in the building. A third plane was also crashed into the Pentagon. The fourth plane crashed into a field in rural Pennsylvania after some passengers attempted to retake control. The attacks killed around 3000 people.
3 Patriot Day: Is It a Public Holiday?
This day is not a holiday. Even though government and public institutions including businesses, schools, and offices are open on this day, they may host outreach initiatives and special activities to mark the occasion.

Observe Patriot Day.
The President has directed the display of the US flag on American homes, the White House, and all government buildings worldwide at half-staff, as a symbol of respect for those killed on September 11, 2001. People observe a moment of silence at 8:46 AM, marking the time the first plane flew into the World Trade Center. Some communities hold special church services or prayer meetings, and those who experience the events may lay flowers or visit memorials.

Symbols.
The September 11, 2001 attacks are often symbolized by images of planes flying into buildings, the Twin Towers collapsing, and people falling from buildings. Pictures of damaged buildings and relatives searching for loved ones are also displayed. The flag of the United States is displayed around these images to remind Americans of their country’s strength in the face of massive terrorist attacks. Patriot Day should not be confused with Patriot Day, which commemorates the battles of Lexington and Concord in 1775.
